Getting Started
Here’s how to connect digital sources to your Media Module:
1. Connect iPhone, iPod, or iPad
You can connect an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or other UPnP device to the Media Module to play music through the PRE32/I32:
- Turn the SELECTOR to choose the Media source.
- Connect your device to the USB-A port using the cable supplied with the device.
- The PRE32/I32 display will show: Media / iPod
You can now browse and control playback using the Primare App — see Using the Primare App, page 6 for details.
Note: To browse music on a USB-A connected iPhone, iPod, or iPad, you will need a second iOS device. Alternatively, you can stream music wirelessly over Wi-Fi using the Primare App.
2. Connect to a Computer
Connect the Media Module to a Windows PC or Mac to use the PRE32/I32 as a digital audio output device.
System requirements: Windows XP SP2 or later / macOS 10.4 or later.
- Connect the computer’s USB port to the USB-B input on the Media Module using a USB-A to USB-B cable.
- The first time it’s connected, drivers will install automatically.
- The Media Module will appear as XMOS USB Audio 2.0 in your system’s sound settings.
- Turn the SELECTOR to choose the USB source.
Tip: Set your computer’s volume to maximum and use the PRE32/I32 volume control for the best playback experience.
3. Connect Digital Inputs
The Media Module supports up to three digital optical inputs and one digital coax input.
Digital Optical (TOSlink):
- Connect optical inputs 1–3 to sources with optical outputs using TOSlink cables.
- Turn the SELECTOR to choose the appropriate source (e.g. Tos1).
Digital Coax:
- Connect digital coax input 4 to a source with a coax output using a digital coax cable.
- Turn the SELECTOR to choose the Coax source.
Note: Digital inputs can be renamed or disabled, just like the standard analogue inputs.
4. Connect to the Internet
Connect the Media Module to the internet via Wi-Fi or a standard Ethernet cable to stream audio or listen to internet radio through the PRE32/I32.
See Setting up the Network Settings, page 4 for configuration details.
Technical Specifications
Features
External Inputs & Outputs
| Connection | Specification |
|---|---|
| Coax Input | 1 x, up to 192 kHz |
| Toslink Inputs | 3 x, up to 192 kHz |
| USB-B Input | 1 x asynchronous, up to 192 kHz (computer playback) |
| USB-A Input | 1 x asynchronous (USB storage / iPhone playback) |
| Coax Output | 1 x, transmitting at 192 kHz — always mirroring the active input source |
Network Connectivity
The Media Module supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (Wi-Fi) network connections. Network settings are accessible via the general settings menu and allow you to:
- Scan for available wireless networks
- Manually specify a network SSID
- Configure DHCP or a fixed IP address
Performance & Input Selection
All inputs are selectable directly from the I32 or PRE32. Each input carries a default name but can be renamed by the user (up to six characters) through the I32/PRE32 display interface, just like any other input.
Inputs are selected via the C23 remote control or the front panel input selector switch. Available sources are:
- Coax — digital coaxial input
- Tos1–3 — Toslink optical inputs 1 to 3
- USB-B — computer USB interface
- USB-A — USB storage device or connected iPhone/iPod/iPad
- Media — must be selected for streaming audio playback
App Control
The Media Module can be controlled via an external app. Switch to the Media input and use either:
- Primare App — available for iPhone, iPad, and Android
- Any generic UPnP app
Note: Some features — including playback from a USB thumb drive, USB-connected iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, and vTuner internet radio — require the Primare App.
